Project Title: | Studies on the Leptospiral sphingomyelinases |
Abstract of Project : | |
My current research focus is on host-pathogen interactions in leptospirosis with specific reference to Leptospiral sphingomyelinases. Leptospirosis is a common zoonotic infection of public concern. The severe form of the disease manifests in a syndrome called Weil's disease characterized by hemorrhage in several organs, including the liver, lungs etc. Sphingomyelinases are enzymes that cause damage to the host cells by killing the host cells, including red blood cells; hence these enzymes are potential virulence factors. As part of my research, I wish to purify and characterize these molecules. Bioinformatic studies and cloning of these molecules are underway in my parent university--University of Hyderabad, and I hope to study their effects on mammalian cells at my host institute at UCLA as well as understand the factors that promote their expression at increased levels. |
